Benga Beat
Gary Ryan

Benga music can trace its roots back to the former province of Nyanza on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is characterized by fast-paced dance rhythms and a sharp lead guitar sound. Over the years, it has also included a variety of percussive instruments including: drums, shakers, sticks, gourds and fanta bottles. Fans of Benga often dance either alone or in a small group, but never holding hands!

Sonatina for Guitar Mov. 1 - Lennox Berkeley

Forlorn Hope Fancy - John Dowland

Lennox Berkeley (1903 - 1989) composed his guitar Sonatina in 1957 for guitarist Julian Bream, who gave its first performance at Morley College, London, on 9th March 1958.

John Dowland (1563 - 1626) was an English composer during the Renaissance period. The term 'Forlorn Hope' developed in the 16th century from the Dutch expression verloren hoop 'lost troop' which referred to a band of soldiers picked to begin an attack, most of whom were not expected to survive. The equivalent French phrase is enfants perdus, 'lost children'.
